Social Gardening Café for Carers
About
The Social Gardening Café project supported the wellbeing of culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) seniors and their carers through social, physical and cultural activities. The aim was to reduce isolation, increase social connection and improve physical and emotional wellbeing by creating welcoming, community-based spaces.
Who was involved
The project supported CALD seniors and carers from a range of cultural backgrounds, including Lebanese, Sri Lankan, Chinese, Vietnamese, Filipino and Syrian communities. Activities were delivered through local community settings across Melbourne.

This project was funded by the Victorian Government and Carers Victoria.
Benefits for participants and community
Participants benefited from:
- Regular social activities that encouraged connection and peer support
- Opportunities to take part in cultural celebrations and shared community experiences
- Gentle physical activities such as gardening, Tai Chi, yoga and group exercise
- Access to culturally appropriate health information and wellbeing activities
- A safe and welcoming environment that supported emotional wellbeing and belonging
Outcomes and impact
During 2023–24, three Social Gardening Cafés were established in Melbourne’s south-east, west and north.
- Around 60 CALD seniors and carers were supported
- Participants reported increased social engagement and reduced feelings of loneliness
- Physical activity helped improve mobility, fitness and confidence
- Health promotion workshops and information sessions supported education and empowerment
- Carers gained practical knowledge, peer support and resources relevant to their daily lives
