Statement on the Voice to Parliament:
Australian Multicultural Community Services’ (AMCS) Board and management team wholeheartedly support the Voice to Parliament.
AMCS’ mission is to improve people’s lives through care, support and empowerment. In line with that, we acknowledge that self-determination is a human right, and that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have the right to participate in the decisions that affect their lives and communities.
We believe in the importance of listening to the First Nations Australian communities and leaders and support The Uluru Statement from the Heart.
We believe that the recognition and inclusion of the First People of Australia in the Australian constitution is well overdue. As an organisation that works with people who have experienced displacement, torture, trauma, slave labour and dispossession, we wish to express our empathy and support for the First People of Australia and acknowledge the impact of colonisation on their lives and communities.
We acknowledge the Wurundjeri, Bunurong and Wadawurrung people as the traditional custodians of the lands on which we work.
